Guitar slinger superhero Slash has long been on my music photographer bucket list. His monster riffs are legendary. His look is so iconic…the top hat, curly fro, leather and his Gibson Les Paul. When I heard Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators were coming to town on the World On Fire Tour 2014 there was no way I was going to miss it. I was thrilled to finally have to chance to photograph this icon! Continue reading →
Rock ‘n’ Rollers Kaleo are on fire lately. They’ve been getting a ton of local radio air play, they played a packed prime time slot at Harpa Concert Hall this past Airwaves and they’ve recently been announced for the 2015 Eurosonic Noorderslag bill. In short, they’re poised to become Iceland’s next big thing. Don’t be surprised if Kaleo arrives on the international stage very soon. Continue reading →
I covered Reykjavík’s beloved annual music bash, Iceland Airwaves! Headliners The Flaming Lips, The Knife, Future Islands and The War on Drugs were all excellent. Plus awesome local bands like FM Belfast (pictured above) and Grísalappalísa totally blew me away. This was the fourth time that I’ve shot the festival, and although it’s always crazy, this was probably my busiest year yet.
It was my first time as a member of the official Airwaves photo team. It was a treat working with a bunch of other talented shooters and all the pros on Airwaves’ staff. I also shot a series of band portraits in the midst of my live coverage. And on top of that, I organized a music photography exhibition in conjunction with the festival called, “Look at the Light: Moments from Iceland Airwaves”. It’s a group exhibition that showcases some of the best concert imagery from Airwaves past. It was a ton of work to pull everything together, but it was really gratifying to make it happen. Without further ado, hit the jump to see some of my concert highlights! Continue reading →
ATP Iceland was back in 2014 even bigger and better than before. I wanted to try something different and challenging, so I decided to shoot a series of backstage band portraits. For some artists I had less than a minute to work with. For others, time was flexible and we tried a few different looks. I didn’t get everyone, but it still turned out pretty great. The first annual Secret Solstice music festival in Reykjavík, Iceland promised 24 hours of sunlight and a stacked lineup with big international headliners like Massive Attack, Disclosure and Schoolboy Q. The rest of the lineup was very diverse and included tons of local talent too. I shot almost 50 bands over three days. Here are some of my personal highlights of the action! Continue reading →
Ragna Kjartansdóttir, aka CELL7, emerged on the scene in 1998 with the first Icelandic hip hop group Subterranean. After a long hiatus, she’s back in full force with her critically acclaimed solo debut, CellF. Her energetic gig at the new downtown venue Húrra featured sick beats, smooth rhymes and positive vibes all around. She also reunited the Subterranean crew for this one special evening! I shot a portrait with Skálmöld before their gig at Borgarleikhúsið! Hit the jump for some details behind the image. Continue reading →
