Masters of mood The National delivered a jubilant, cacophonous set at SPIN Magazine’s 25th anniversary concert at Terminal 5.
Photographer’s Notes
One huge factor in photographing this show was full-set access. I’ve shot in Terminal 5 many times before and lighting is always a crapshoot. I knew going into this gig that three songs and out just wasn’t going to cut it. Since I’d shot The National at Radio City Music Hall, I contacted the band’s publicist to let her know I was very interested in covering their show at Terminal 5. I explained that more time results in better images, and that full-set access would ensure the best images possible. That’s all she needed to hear, and happily obliged my request.
The best part about full-set access is the luxury of time and patience that it affords. It means you more time to anticipate band members’ movement and lighting. Overall, the lighting treatment far exceeded my expectations, but full-set access was a huge boon because the first three songs were quite dark.
My exposure varied significantly, ranging from 1/500 and f/3.5 at ISO 800 when the lights flared to 1/250 and f/2.8 at ISO 3200 in the dark.
