Legendary English alt-rock band The Cure performed their classic albums–Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds and Faith–in their entirety on the “Reflections” Tour 2011 at Beacon Theatre.
Photographer’s Notes
With three full albums, plus multiple encores, this show clocked in at more than three hours. Such an epic performance proved that The Cure is both extremely generous to their fans and still one of world’s premiere touring acts.
Shooting rules was first three for Three Imaginary Boys plus first two for both Seventeen Seconds and Faith. The reason for the extra songs was because additional band members are featured on Seventeen Seconds and Faith. No photo pit at the Beacon so photographers had to shoot from either side of the stage. I chose stage-right for first three of Three Imaginary Boys, then switched to stage-left for the last two albums. Shooting from the far sides of stage didn’t offer much flexibility or unique looks. Luckily, the Beacon staff was very accommodating and allowed me to shoot from the balcony after the allotted song limit.
It’s almost impossible not to focus on frontman Robert Smith. His look is just so iconic–the teased hair, black clothes, pale skin, smeared red lipstick and black eyeliner. The lighting treatment matched the moody vibes of the band with mostly cool colors and thick waves of haze. There was occasional blasts from LED rigs on both sides of the stage. My exposures varied significantly. I did drastic white balance adjustments on some of these images in post. I was interested in emphasizing color and mood in this set more than necessarily conveying an ‘accurate’ white balance.
